BARSTOW — All hail Barstow’s new royal family! The city crowned its newest queens and princesses on Saturday night at its 79th annual Miss Barstow Pageant.

The event, which was held at Barstow High School, featured a “Queen of the Nile” theme.

Heather Fields, 20, walked away with the Miss Barstow title for 2018, while Alexa Lerma, 16, won the Miss Teen Barstow contest.

Fields was inspired to enter the pageant by her predecessor.

“Miss Barstow 2017 (Jessie McKinnon) was such an amazing guide and role model,” Fields said.

While Fields said she entered the pageant for fun, the path to victory wasn’t always a smooth one for Lerma.

“There were days I didn’t feel completely confident, but I did always try to give my 110 percent,” Lerma said.

Both winners believed that pageant participation allowed them to grow.

“Every young woman deserves to be confident. A pageant is an amazing experience and helped me become confident in myself,” said Lerma.
